Print Projects (using InDesign)

Here are some helps for getting started in InDesign, as well as a Glossary of terms.

We have a template for making a book in InDesign–please contact Lisa Bickmore (lisa.bickmore@slcc.edu) or Charlotte Howe (charlotte.howe@slcc.edu) for further information and/or help in using the template.

  • Chapbook template in InDesign available here! And here are some tips for working with this template (courtesy of Charlotte Howe). (For guidance in planning a book project with your class, look here.)

Video Essays/Digital Stories

Here is a Quick Guide  for making a video essay.

Here’s a Quick Guide for using Audacity.

And a Quick Guide for making screencasts using Screenr.
For video editing, you can use
  • Final Cut Express (on two iMacs in the Publication Center) or Adobe Premiere Elements (on most of the iMacs in the Publication Center).
  • You can also try using QuickTime Player’s new built-in editor–it’s limited but potentially all you need. (To get help with this, you can go to Help > QuickTime Player Help > Create and Edit Movies.)
  • You can also use iMovie and Windows Movie Maker.
  • A couple of free video editing platforms (at least in their stripped-down versions): Lightworks and Avidemux, which you might want to look at.

More visual projects:

Here are a few resources for photo essays and photo hosting:

  • A site with ideas for photo essay assignments
  • A site that has a handful of photo essays (The Photo Essay)
  • And another site (Photophilanthropy)
  • A couple of tools for clean-looking, captionable slideshows: SimpleViewer (see especially the SimpleViewer, the TiltViewer and the AutoViewer)

Resources for graphic texts:

For photo editing, you can use any of a host of free photo editing platforms, such as Picasa or Pixlr. (There are many–you can search for “free photo editor” or “free photo editor online.”) The Publication Center also has PhotoShop.

Your students may enjoy–and you may find applications for–the text-to-video generator GoAnimate.

Audio Projects:

For audio projects, see the helps on Audacity above (on all the PCs in the Publication Center, but also free to download to your own computer), but also look at Soundcloud and Vocalo for free audio hosting, which allows you to store your audio projects online and embed them elsewhere. If you’re working on a Mac, you can also use GarageBand for your audio projects.
